Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses (RGP)

Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses

RGPs are the latest advancement in the technology in the family of hard contact lenses. They are softer and more comfortable than their original counterparts (the hard contact lenses) That is why they are now called “rigid” gas permeable lenses instead of “hard” contact lenses.

RGP lenses are particularly a popular option for those:

  • Who require contact lenses that can provide for more difficult or complex prescriptions
  • Who have difficulty achieving their desired visual correction with soft contact lenses
  • Who have medical eye conditions such as keratoconus (irregularity of the cornea)
  • Children or teenagers who want to slow down their eye power changes

RGP lenses are great alternatives to soft contact lenses because they:

  • are durable, and have a longer lifespan than soft contact lenses
  • have better oxygen permeability (allow more oxygen to reach the cornea)
  • have lower risk of infections compared to soft contact lenses
