Rigid gas permeable lens for keratoconus

Rigid gas permeable or RGP is a vision corrective lens made of semi-hard oxygen-permeable polymers. Unlike soft contact lenses, RGP provides better oxygen transmission, sharper vision, durability and better deposit resistance.

RGP lenses have the ability to retain the tear film between the back surface of the lens and the cornea, resulting in a more even refractive surface. The RGP lens can improve the vision of keratoconic eyes that are not responsive to spectacles or soft contact lenses.

Optimax optometrists are experienced in fitting RGP lenses for keratoconic and other irregular refraction eyes. For the fitting procedure, an eye examination is necessary to determine the corneal curvature, topography, prescription and the external and internal health of the eyes

There is a range of keratoconus RGP lenses that cater for different stages of keratoconus. RGP lens fitting requires experience and skill and several trial fittings are necessary for the optometrist to get the correct fit. A period of adaptation to the lenses may be necessary and correctly fitted lenses provide good vision and comfort.

In advanced stages of keratoconus with a steep cone shape, lens fitting may not be possible and other treatment options have to be considered.

RGP lenses do not arrest the progression of keratoconus but provide a non surgical solution to improve vision before considering more interventional procedures.
